Introduction
We always recommend creating some test orders to make sure that your Return Center is set up correctly. By testing you will ensure that:
- Everything is working and behaves as expected.
- You have a good understanding of the returns process.
- Your shopper experience customizations (brand and copy) are updated.
We are proposing 2 scenarios although you can run as many tests as needed:
- Scenario 1 - Create a return
- Scenario 2 - Create a return with an exchange
Before we can start testing the return experience, we will need to create test orders in Shopify.
Create Test Orders
Before testing, we will need some orders within Shopify. We recommend at least 2 orders with multiple products. If you are offering exchanges, be sure that at least one of the test orders contains an item with equal priced variants in-stock so that you can test the exchange process.
You can create orders for testing in a few different ways. We recommend placing one of your orders on a real payment method - so that the refunding process can be fully tested.
Option 1: Create order in the same way your shopper would, using a real credit card. Then, Mark the order as fulfilled manually - no need to fully fulfill.
Option 2: Create order from draft following the instructions outlined in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFdNVPGff5Y . Please make sure that the order:
- Has a customer attached
- Has a shipping address
- Is marked as Paid
- Is marked as Fulfilled
Option 3: Create a test order using Shopify Bogus Gateway or Shopify Payments Testing Mode. Instructions for this method can be found here.
Scenario 1: Create a Return
Create a test return to make sure that your Return Center is set up correctly. We will want to confirm the following:
- Order data is correctly imported into Returnly.
- The shipping labels are correctly generated.
- Before you start, Make sure you have a test order in Shopify that is marked as fulfilled.

- Lookup the RMA in the Manage Returns section of the Returnly Dashboard.
- Click on the return to see the RMA details page.
- Manually mark the items in the RMA as delivered by clicking the Items delivered button.
- Click the Process return button to close the return out. This will move the return to the Complete tab.
Scenario 2: Create an Exchange
Create a test exchange and ensure the order is injected properly and is fulfillable. We will want to confirm the following:
- The exchange order is fulfillable with your warehouse or within your fulfillment software
- No errors caused by the exchange shipping method that is injected.
- If there is an error, you may need to map the shipping method with your fulfillment provider.
- Before you start:
-
- Make sure to set your exchange triggers - instructions here.
- Make sure the test order in Shopify has an order item with equal priced variants to exchange for.
