Discounts strategies can have a meaningful impact on your conversion rate and top line sales. But what happens when a customer exchanges a discounted item and how does it impact their exchange order? In this article, we’ll explore the different types of shopper discounts you may offer and how Returnly approaches exchanges when discounts are applied.
Types of discounts
First, let’s explore the different types of discounts you may offer your customers:
- Order discounts (such as percentage off or fixed amount)
- Product discounts (such as percentage off or fixed amount)
- Buy X, Get Y (BOGO)
- Free shipping discounts
Discounted exchanges for a different variant
To provide the best possible customer experience, Returnly allows shoppers to exchange for variants of the same product and still enjoy the discount originally applied. This is still the case if the price of the related variant has increased or decreased since the original purchase; the customer will not be refunded or required to pay for any difference.
Note: When items are set up as different products within Shopify (even if they are variants), Returnly will follow the Shop Collections discount carry-over logic.
Discounted exchanges for a differently priced product
When a customer exchanges for a differently priced product using Shop Collections, the exchange order will be discounted the resulting original discount in value (i.e. the dollar amount); Returnly will not re-apply the discount code to the exchange order. Note that this is only the case if a customer exchanges for an item that is of equal or greater value to their original purchase. No discount is carried over on lower priced exchanges in an effort to incentivize shoppers to exchange for something at least as expensive as their original purchase.
Examples:
- Percentage Discount: 20% off a $150 purchase will have a maximum of $30 carried over to the exchange order. Returnly will not re-apply the 20% off discount on the exchange.
- Fixed Amount Discount: $30 off a $100 purchase will have a maximum of $30 carried over to the exchange order.
- Buy X get Y (BOGO)
- If the shopper exchanges the item that they paid full price on, no discount is carried over.
- If the shopper exchanges an item that has a 100% discount, then they can exchange for any item up to the value of that item for free. The shopper will not be refunded the difference if they select a less expensive item.
- If the shopper exchanges the item that was fully paid for and chooses a less expensive item, they may be pocketing the difference and keeping their free item.
Note: Free shipping discounts do not impact a product’s price and therefore have no impact on a customer’s exchange or discount carry over.
“Compare at” or slash through pricing
While Shopify considers adding a “Compare at” or slash-through price to be a discount, Returnly recognizes this as a price change. Therefore should a customer opt to exchange this item, there is no discount carry over.
