Instant Exchanges
Available to Premium Plans.
With Instant Credit, merchants can offer Instant Exchanges on customers' return with Returnly taking on 100% of the product and return risk of the original order.
If credit is denied, your customer can either proceed to:
- A Return
or
- An Extended Exchange (Fall-back for Instant Exchanges). For further details, consult our dedicated article onExtended Exchanges.
How Instant Exchange orders are created
Instant Exchange orders are created instantly, at the time of return creation/initiation and are not dependent on the status of the return order.
Automated Exchanges
Available to Monthly Plans.
- Exchange order placed upon carrier's scan: Exchange on scan.
- Not tied to Instant Credit.
How Automated Exchange orders are created
The exchange order is created as soon as the original order is scanned at the carrier for return shipping.
At the time the RMA transitions to the In-Transit status, the requested exchange order will show up in your Shopify instance.
If an exchange order cannot be generated at the time of scan, Returnly has fall-back logic to attempt the order when the RMA is in its Delivered status.

How to View Type of Exchange on your Return Manager
In the Customer section, an Automated Exchange would be classified as an "Automated" type and also reflect a "Pending" status, indicating that the exchange order will be created after the return has been shipped.

Q: Can I charge return shipping fees for Automated Exchanges?

Q: Inventory-related issues:
A: With Automated Exchanges, there might be instances where out-of-stock exchanges might happen as the new exchange order does not put a hold on inventory.
Q: How do I track Automated Exchanges?
A:To track Automated Exchanges, you'll be primarily reliant on the Exchange On Scan report. These orders will also show up in the Gross-to-net-Sales report.
