We know that merchants of different sizes have different needs. One such need is to have the ability to return items to multiple warehouses through Returnly. We will walk you through how to enable this feature and what you need to do (in Returnly and your e-commerce platform) to make it.
Note: You must be a Returnly Premium customer to be eligible for the multi-warehouse feature. Usually, Returnly Premium customers are assigned an Onboarding Project Manager (OPM) who will help them set up and configure this portion.
If you are a monthly customer and want Returnly Premium, or already have it and haven't yet enabled and set up this feature, please reach out to support@returnly.com.
Answer These Questions First
Answering these three questions helps determine how the you need to set up your Returnly instance to accommodate your warehouse location(s).
-
Are you setting up two or more Returning to addresses?
-
Do you have multiple locations in Shopify?
-
Do you have have inventory for online at all or some of the locations?
If working with Returnly to set this up for the first time, please give them the answers to these questions to expedite the setup process.
Adding a New Warehouse in Returnly
To add a new warehouse in Returnly, follow the instructions below:
- In your Returns Dashboard, go to Your Account → Addresses → Locations
- At the top right of the screen, hover over the + sign and select New Location.
- Add the details of your new warehouse in the form as prompted.
- In the Tag field, add a short, unique, acronym for your warehouse (in the example below, it is OAK). This tag must be added as a Shopify product tag later, so we recommend keeping it simple with no more than 6-8 letters.
- Once completed, select Validate and Save.
Your additional address will show up as as a new location (in this example, it is Returnly 2 at the OAK location).
Adding Warehouse Tags in Your E-Commerce Platform
In order for Returnly to know where to send each line item on a given return, we must match the tag that you have added to your warehouses with a tag associated with a given product. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Go to the products in Shopify that you would like returned to a warehouse that is not your “Default” Warehouse.
- Add the Tag to the product as specified in the Merchant Dashboard.
IMPORTANT: The tag in Shopify must be formatted as follows: rtly-ship-to:{TAG}
- There should be not space after the colon and the {TAG} portion must match the tag you used in the Returnly dashboard exactly. In our example, the Shopify tag would be rtly-ship-to:OAK.
- Save!
Note: If an order is placed without the Shopify tag, Returnly will send the item back to the “Default” warehouse.
- The default warehouse designated via Returnly will be printed on all shipping labels.
Multi-warehouse Tag
Tag: rtly-ship-to:{warehouse_tag}
Example: rtly-ship-to:WH2
Description: Indicates which warehouse location address would be printed on the return shipping label. This tag should only be used for products or orders that would be returned to locations outside of your current default return shipping address.
With each label generated, a corresponding packing slip will be provided for printing and inclusion inside the package. Each packing slip will include line item information on the products associated with the corresponding return label. The multi-warehouse functionality is only offered to accounts on the annual plan and can be enabled upon request by reaching out to support@returnly.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What if two products on the same return have different Tags?
A: If there is a return created where multiple line items have different Returnly Warehouse Tags multiple shipping labels will be created for that return. In order to make it easy for the shopper to know which label to use for which items, we will also generate a packing slip for them to use.
Q: My items have the correct tags but are still being sent to the default address. What is happening?
A: This can happen if the tag was added to the product in Shopify after the order was created. All future orders for this product will be sent to the warehouse as designated by the Tag.
Q: I don’t see the “add new warehouse” button on my dashboard. How do I turn that on?
A: The multiple warehouse feature is for Returnly Premium customers. If you meet this criterion and would like to enable the feature, please reach out to support@returnly.com.
