Discounts applied to the shopper’s original order are now carried over to their new exchange order. In some instances, those discounts are being prorated, i.e. not carried over in full. This article intends to define and exemplify such scenarios so merchants have a more in-depth overview of discounts and how those would be allocated.
Discounts & Considerations
Below are the types of discounts that can be configured in Shopify for the original order.
The resulting dollar amount that is applied to the original order line item will be carried over; Shopify discount codes will not be re-applied on an exchange order, only the discounted dollar amount on the original order.
Within the Discount tab in Shopify, we recommend applying discounts (whether those are Discount codes or Automatic discounts) instead of changing the base price of the product.
Variant exchanges will continue to be supported as long as you properly discount in Shopify.
Percentage
The discounted dollar amount previously applied to the original order is carried over, and not the discount percentage on the new item.
Example:
Discount code: 20%
20% off a $100 order will have a maximum of $20 carried over to the exchange order.
If a shopper exchanges an item for a $200 order, $20 is carried over (not the resulting 20% of the exchange order).
Fixed Amount
$20 off a $100 order will have a maximum of $20 carried over to the exchange order.
In sum, the discounted amount on the original order is carried over whether that would result from applying a percentage or fixed amount on the original order. |
