Gift Card Tags are tags that can be applied for select products and/or orders to drive specific gift card refund behaviors for RMAs. These tags can help enforce a refund to gift card only policy for certain items or incentivize shoppers to choose to receive a gift card and free shipping instead of a refund back to their original form of payment.
Requirements:
- Shopify (any version) or a platform that allows gift card issuance via API.
- Not compatible for stores that includes sale tax in the product price.

Gift Card Tags
Refund to Gift Card Only Tag
Tag: rtly-gc
Description: Allocates the refund balance to a gift card instead of refunding back to the original form of payment. If at least one item of the RMA has a Refund to Gift Card Only Tag, then the tag will be applied to the entire RMA.
Refund to Gift Card Free Shipping Offer Tag
Tag: rtly-gc:offer-free-shipping
Description: Offers shoppers the option to either refund back to the original form of payment or receive a gift card and free return shipping.
Our Refund to Gift Card Free Shipping Offer Tag is functional at the order level.
Tag Priority
If multiple tags have been included in an RMA, the tag with the highest priority will be used:
- (highest priority) rtly-gc
- rtly-gc:offer-free-shipping
Shopper Journey
1 . Shopper visits the Return Center and completes the Start a Return form.
2. They would then submit a return for the selected item(s).
3. Returnly will check the selected item(s) for any of the applied tags below:

4. If any items are tagged with the Refund to Gift Card Only Tag (rtly-gc), the shopper will see that the refund method on the Refund Estimated Page would be to a gift card.
5. Once their refund has been processed, they will receive the refund balance in a newly issued gift card.

Refund to Gift Card Free Shipping Offer Tag
4. As our rtly-gc:offer-free-shipping tag is functional at the order level, the shopper will be offered several return options on the Estimated Refund Page:
- Refund to Original Payment Method
- Refund to Gift Card and receive free shipping
5a. If they select the Refund to Original Payment Method option, any expected return shipping costs would be deducted from their refund.
5b. If they select the Refund to Gift Card, the return shipping costs would be waived for the shopper and they will receive the refund balance in a newly issued gift card.

Customizing Text
The text for the displayed options on the Estimated Refund Page could be modified in the Customize dashboard > Custom Text tab > Estimated Refund Page > Return Summary.
