The following details need to be configured prior to a merchant going live with International Returns.
Adding International Product Details
On Shopify's platform, merchants must first populate shipping data (Weight, Country of origin, and HS - Harmonized System) tariff code for all products and variants expected to be shipped internationally in order to generate accurate customs documentation along with its respective shipping label.
The table below captures Shopify's description of each product-related field (Shopify's dashboard, under Products, Shipping).
The image below illustrates product data.
The image below illustrates one HS code:
Note: Merchants on a Returnly custom plan will need to ensure the international product details are added into their own data warehouse and included in their APIs if they want the information to be passed along correctly.
Shipping Carrier Requirements
Shipping Label Rates
Returnly will require the merchant to set flat rate shipping for each currency they operate in. The merchant must provide a flat rate for each currency that the merchant supports in their Shopify store linked to their Returnly Return Center. If a currency is not configured, Returnly will not be able to generate a shipping label for the shopper.
Note: A flat rate could be $0.00 which means you, the merchant, are taking on the cost of all shipping for international customers.
Shipping Carrier Requirements
Merchants must have a business address in the country of the warehouse that shoppers are sending return packages. Merchants must set their duties configuration to Delivered Duty Paid so the merchants assume the duties and fees associated with this return. It is highly recommended to set these duties on merchants' Shopify dashboard as they set their shipping label rates.
Note: For further details on how to configure a Shopify's store for cross-border sales, please refer to Shopify documentation.
How Return Shipping Costs are Determined
In setting the policy for return shipping costs for international returns, a merchant must specify and set a "Flat Rate" amount for each of the currencies international shoppers place orders using (each a presentment currency). This eliminates the need for currency conversions and ensures that refund estimates are calculated accurately.
If a "Flat Rate" amount is not set for a specific currency, any such paid order initiated for return will not yield a shipping label or customs documentation. Instead, the shopper will be provided with the "Return To Address" to ship their return to using their own, externally sourced label.
Note: A currency-specific "Flat Rate" amount will be respected and prioritized over any other set policy or tagging arrangement.
How Currency is Accounted for in an International Return
Across the platform, and at various stages throughout the lifecycle of an RMA, currency for international returns will be accounted for as follows:
- Shopper Experience
For the shopper experience (returns flow and emails), all return values, including the "Subtotal" and "Refund Estimate," will be reflected in the original currency that the order was purchased in. - Refunds
All issued refunds for processed RMAs will also be in the order's original transacted currency. As merited, Shopify will manage any necessary conversion back to a merchant’s base currency. - Return Manager
Within the Manage Returns section of the Return Manager, all return values will be reflected in the shopper's currency (presentment currency).
For Analytics widgets and corresponding metrics, applicable numerical values will be reflected with a $ sign.
Language Customization
Merchants have the option to translate the full shopper experience -- returns flow and emails -- into languages they serve shoppers in. Where enabled, all copy translations will be completed by the merchant through the Customize section of the Return Manager; Returnly does not provide translation services.
When the Return Center is accessed, Returnly will automatically detect the language to display for the shopper experience based on a shopper's locale browser setting.
