Overview
How bundles work on Shopify:a product that combines other products. It is worth noting that items in a bundle are fulfilled together.
Example of a bundle:a suit that includes trousers and a jacket.
Advantage: a bundle can be sold as a group or as separate items.
For merchants offering bundles (a grouping of products at a combined price), it’s worth considering the intended outcome when a customer opts to return only part of their purchase.
How does Returnly approach bundles?
Based on how products and bundles are set up in Shopify will determine the corresponding outcome.
- If the bundle is set up as a single, combined SKU in Shopify, then Returnly will display the entire bundle grouped together on one product card within the return flow. In this instance, the customer can return or exchange only the entire bundle.
-
If the items within the bundle are set up as individual SKUs in Shopify, then Returnly will display each individual SKU on its own product card within the return flow.
- When a customer returns an individual item from the bundle, any discount applied to that SKU in Shopify will be reflected proportionally in their refund.
- When a customer exchanges an individual item from the bundle for another variant, any original discount applied to that SKU in Shopify will be carried over to their new exchange order. If they exchange for a product of lesser value and therefore are owed a balance, they will receive the balance as a refund.
- When a customer returns an individual item from the bundle, any discount applied to that SKU in Shopify will be reflected proportionally in their refund.
- If the bundle is a free gift with purchase, we recommend marking the free item as $0 in value or applying a 100% discount in Shopify. Thereafter, tag the product as non-returnable.
Using tags to drive intended behavior
With Returnly, you can leverage tags to more granularly drive returns policy settings for individual products and bundles.
1. Non-returnable tag
a. Should you tag a single-SKU bundle as non-returnable, then the customer cannot return any item within the bundle.
b. Should you tag an individual item within a multi-SKU bundle as non-returnable, it will also be considered non-returnable if available for individual purchase outside of the bundle.
c. If you prefer to accept returns for bundles on a case by case basis, you can mark the bundle as non-returnable and ask your customer to reach out to your CS team. In this case, it’s worth noting that the default messaging for items marked as non-returnable is, “This item is non-returnable.” Therefore, you may opt to update the default messaging to clarify. This can be done by navigating to: Customize > Custom Text > Item Selection > Policy Details > Message: Non-Returnable.
2. Gift card tag
a. You might also consider leveraging Returnly’s gift card tag, which allows your customer to return the bundle and receive their refund as a gift card to purchase something new while keeping that revenue on your books.
